At Steer In, we believe that eating isn’t just about satisfying hunger — it’s about making a choice that supports the land, the animals, and the people who nurture them. As Wendell Berry said, “Eating is an agricultural act. Eat responsibly.” That philosophy is at the heart of everything we do.
We’re the Van Vleet family — Dennis, a fifth-generation dairy farmer; Lea, a rancher’s daughter; Stacy, a hard-working FFA officer; Jessica, with a servant’s heart; Allison, a free spirit; and McCormick, an automation engineer. After spending 27 years in industrial and service industries, we returned to farming with a new mission — not to scale up and feed the world, but to scale down and feed our community.
Our approach to farming is rooted in regenerative agriculture — a way of working with nature, not against it. This method allows the soil to thrive, the animals to stay healthy, and the ecosystem to flourish. By farming on a smaller, more mindful scale, we’ve created a balanced environment that produces better food and a better quality of life. It’s not just about efficiency — it’s about integrity, sustainability, and joy in the work we do.
Unlike industrial farming, which often turns the farm into a factory, we’ve done the opposite. We’ve separated the farm from the factory and brought our professional experience into the business of real, honest food. The result? Good food, fresh from good farming — grown, harvested, and prepared by us, then served to you fast, with a smile.
Our journey back to the land started simply — a trip to a local farmers market for a few steaks. That visit sparked a relationship with a farmer, which grew into buying half a cow, then a whole one, and eventually, into becoming farmers again ourselves. Through this experience, we discovered how difficult, yet how essential, it is to “eat responsibly.”
We may not be able to change the world overnight, but we can make a difference here — right in our community. So we invite you to steer on in to Steer In, where every meal is a reflection of the land, the labor, and the love that goes into it.
Eat here. Eat responsibly. From our farm to your fork.
